Ramirez offers a stirringly expressionist vision of the boxing world
The Guardian
The Royale portrays how heavyweight boxer Jay who also happens to be black, faces discrimination as the 1905 sporting world is racially segregated. Set in a boxing ring, the show details the struggle for Jay to get to the top and the undeniable talent he has while attaining his place as the champion.
Undeterred by a segregated society, Jay continues to train and fight in order to prove that he is just as good as any white boxer in the ring. This fight mimics the struggle for black people in society at the time and the battle for acceptance. With the help of a boxing promoter, we watch Jay in the lead up to what becomes known as 'The Fight of the Century' where Jay gets to finally face his rival.
