Why See A Bronx Tale?

Broadway ShowsMusicalsCritics Pick

Broadway premiere

Directors Robert De Niro and Jerry Zaks bring their triumphant New York musical to Broadway, following an acclaimed run in Millburn. Mirroring the gritty setting and finger-clicking music of fellow Big Apple musical Jersey Boys, A Bronx Tale takes place in the early 1960s, and follows the fortunes of a local Bronx kid who is drawn into the world of organized crime, much to the horror of his bus driver father. The story is based on actor Chazz Palminteri's one man show, which De Niro previously adapted for the big screen in 1993.

Music of the Streets

Pulsing with down and dirty doo-wop and big band swing, the music comes courtesy of Oscar, Grammy and Tony Award-winning composer Alan Menken, who has scored many of Disney's modern animation classics, including Beauty and the Beast, Tangled and Aladdin. Tony nominee Glen Slater (School of Rock, Sister Act) wrote the lyrics.

The musical held its world premiere earlier this year at the Paper Mill Playhouse. In their review, The New York Times called it "an exceptionally slick and skillfully assembled musical", which "combines heart, humor and a flavorful atmosphere."

What is A Bronx Tale About?

Growing up in the Bronx, Calogero knows that there's one man who rules over the bustling Italian-American neighbourhood - mob boss Sonny. Their two paths meet unexpectedly one day, when Calogero witnesses Sonny carrying out a hit. Italian loyalty and a sense of self-preservation mean Calogero refuses to name names to the cops, and Sonny, impressed with the young kid's spirit, takes him under his wing. As Calogero grows older, and heads ever deeper into Sonny's undeworld, his father must try and wrestle him away from a life of crime.
