Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre at Simon Rose Mandel Theatre

Why see Jane Eyre?

Jane Eyre returns

First seen on Broadway in 2000 Charlotte Bronte's most famous heroine, Jane Eyre is returning to the stage in this 2018 revamp! Earning five Tony nominations, including Best Musical, when it first debuted at the turn of the millennium, Charlotte Bronte's famous novel comes to life on stage this fall.

For the past year CMT Artistic Director, Miles J. Sternfeld has been working hard in collaboration with Paul Gordon (Tony-nominated composer and lyricist) and John Caird (Tony-winning book writer) in revising the original musical. This new revised version will see the cast of ten play multiple roles throughout the show, in this more intimate musical.

What is Jane Eyre about?

Orphaned Jane Eyre despises living with her cruel Aunt and cousin, so when the opportunity to attend Lowood School for Girls arises young Jane grabs it with both hands. Shortly after leaving school Jane is hired as a governess at the great Thornfield Hall where she meets the mysterious Mr. Rochester sparking a journey of love and loss where young Jane must face her own sense of morality head on.

JANE EYRE-A Remarkable Remount

As an 18+ year Eyre-head, it was with hopeful energy that I sat down at Cleveland Musical Theatre's "revised premiere" of JANE EYRE. By its end, I was NOT disappointed. Director Miles Sternfeld has an eye for theatrics and a sense of the human condition. Between his storytelling and Martin Cespedes' choreography, Bronte's novel is adapted in a way that keeps action moving. Helmed by Broadway vets Andrea Goss/Matt Bogart, Jane/Rochester are portrayed in a painfully honest manner as we watch their first unexpected spark, their star-crossed connection, and ultimately their miraculous reunion. The ensemble carries this journey EXPERTLY, with stand-out performances going to Alison England in versatile-dual roles of Mrs. Fairfax/Reed (are those really the same women?), as well as Cody Gerszewski who's honest tenor-tones as St John are surprisingly countered by his early comedic portrayals as John Reed/Tedo Ingram. See this show while you can, as it will be gone before you know it. ... Read more
